Horst Schlämmer sucht das Glück
The cinema release of “Horst Schlämmer sucht das Glück”. Hape Kerkeling slips back into his most famous role and, this time, sets out in search of happiness, as he believes humanity has lost its smile. A road trip across Germany begins…
We visited costume designer Regina Tiedeken and her team on set and were able to take a look behind the scenes of the shoot. We also had time to ask Regina two questions about her work on this production.
Theaterkunst: We all know the iconic Horst Schlämmer costume: grey curls, glasses, crooked teeth, beige coat and the joint bag. How did you approach the costume design for ‘Horst Schlämmer sucht das Glück’?
Regina Tiedeken: The film is conceived as a mockumentary, and the scenes were intended to look as though they were taken from real life. However, the costume design for the film ended up being much more varied than initially anticipated, because Horst keeps watching his favourite series from the 80s – and once even one from the 60s featuring Gabi Wampel, played by Tahnee – and we filmed all these series clips. That gave us the chance to really let our imaginations run wild, and once again we found some brilliant pieces from you!
Theaterkunst: What inspires you in your work as a costume designer and what fascinates you about this profession?
Regina Tiedeken: The first source of inspiration is, of course, always the story itself. In the next step, I then seek it out specifically, depending on the project. For my first feature film, MEIN NAME IST BACH, we visited museums, pored over illustrated books and read up on the subject. For FREMDE HAUT, we went to refugee shelters and spoke to people in person. For FACK JU GÖHTE, we visited school playgrounds, pored over youth magazines and studied the kids’ idols on social media, and for IN EINEM LAND DAS ES NICHT MEHR GIBT, we travelled to Tbilisi with Aelrun, our director – following in the footsteps of the East – and, among other things, worked with students on a semester-long film project… That’s also what makes this profession so fascinating: telling stories, delving deep into them and, in doing so, constantly discovering new worlds and special people, like HaPe this time. And then setting off on this adventurous journey with the whole team, both in front of and behind the camera. Every single person contributes to the success of the bigger picture, and I absolutely love it!
